The Stories of Breece D’J Pancake

Breece D’J Pankcake was a talented, young writer whose promising career was cut short by suicide.  Pancake was a native of South Charleston and attended West Virginia University. This collection of short stories describes life in rural Appalachia. Pancake’s stark and honest prose sticks with you long after you’ve finished reading.

The Telltale Lilac Bush by Ruth Ann Musick

The Telltale Lilac Bush has been one of my favorite books since childhood! It is a compilation of ghost stories from around the state of West Virginia. Ruth Ann Musick was a leading force in collecting West Virginia folklore. She taught at Fairmont State from 1946-1967. The FSU library is named after Musick and a mural of artwork from The Telltale Lilac Bush can be seen there. Many of the stories Musick gathered for The Telltale Lilac Bush are set right here in Marion County. This includes my personal favorite story, “Big John’s Ghost” – a tale about a miner in Grant Town who loses his head during a fatal accident and comes back to the mine as a ghostly visitor. I recommend this book to people who enjoy spooky tales and to anyone interested in West Virginia culture!

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I have to start off by saying that this book is wildly popular right now, so naturally I wanted to read it. I started out 112 on the waiting list through WVDELI, and it finally became available a couple of days ago. Gone Girl is about a couple, Amy and Nick that have reached their five-year wedding anniversary. On each anniversary, Amy has provided clues that take the couple all over town to memorable (for her, anyway) places they visited during the past year, culminating in his present. He never gets the clues, which frustrates her to no end.

On the morning of their fifth anniversary, she tells him he needs to take some time out and decide where they are going in their lives. She loves him, but as with a lot of couples, life has come between them, and he has to decide if he still feels the same about her.  Nick goes off to work at a bar he and his sister own and, upon returning home a few hours later, finds the house in disarray. Signs of a struggle are everywhere, and his wife is not to be found.

The book continues on with Nick trying to cooperate with the police, who seem to be looking at him instead of elsewhere. The chapters alternate between Nick’s account of the present events and Amy’s diary from the day they met, going forward.

I’m still reading, so I can’t tell you how it ends, but it’s very easy to read. The author flows through events nicely and it’s not a problem jumping back and forth between chapters. Gone Girl is very interesting and suspenseful. You won’t be sorry you picked this one.
